More than twenty years after the release of Kirby Air Ride on the Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo has officially announced its long awaited follow up. Titled Kirby Air Riders, the new game will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 20. The reveal came during the latest Nintendo Direct, where director Masahiro Sakurai returned to the Kirby franchise for the first time since the original release in 2003.
Sakurai’s Return and Development Team
Masahiro Sakurai, the legendary creator behind both Kirby and the Super Smash Bros. series, is once again directing the project. While HAL Laboratory has traditionally been the main developer for Kirby games, this time Kirby Air Riders is being co developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Sora LTD, the same team behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This marks a notable shift in the franchise’s creative direction.
During the Direct, Sakurai joked about the development process, saying, “Why is making a game so hard?” He also acknowledged similarities to Mario Kart, pointing out that while both games share a racing foundation, Air Riders is designed with a broader focus on unique gameplay modes.
Gameplay Expansions and New Features
The original Kirby Air Ride was known for its simple single button controls. This time, Sakurai confirmed that a second button has been added, along with expanded mechanics to modernize the experience.
Key features include:
- Expanded Roster: Alongside different Kirby forms, players can now race as King Dedede, Meta Knight, and Starman, as well as other lesser known characters. Each racer can use copy abilities and special moves that enhance speed, offense, or defense.
- Multiplayer Options: Up to eight players can compete locally, while online races will support up to 16 players.
- City Trial Mode: A returning fan favorite mode where players collect upgrades, steal new rides, and battle rivals within a time limit before entering final Stadium competitions.
- Dynamic Field Events: Randomized events will trigger during City Trial, leading to short battles and challenges that shape the final outcome.
These updates aim to capture the charm of the original while delivering fresh content that appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers.
Launch Details and Hands On Demo
Kirby Air Riders will join the Nintendo Switch 2 lineup as one of its few major first party launches this year. It also arrives shortly after the release of Mario Kart World, giving fans two distinct racing titles to explore.
A playable demo of Kirby Air Riders will be available at PAX West in Seattle from August 29 to September 1. Nintendo is expected to announce pricing and additional details closer to release.
A Unique Place in Nintendo’s Lineup
While comparisons to Mario Kart are inevitable, Sakurai emphasized that the appeal of Kirby Air Riders lies beyond traditional racing. With a focus on strategic modes, character driven gameplay, and the chaotic fun of City Trial, the game seeks to carve out its own identity on Switch 2.
For fans of Kirby and multiplayer racing, Kirby Air Riders could be one of the most exciting Nintendo releases of the year.
